Les articles de la presse américaine consacrés à Ségolène Royal comportent en général les mots «révolution», «éléphants», «bikini», «pas mariée» et, pas très loin, la citation kind-of-oulala "la démocratie, c'est comme l'amour : plus il y en a, plus elle grandit."
Le New York Times relève que « Son inexpérience en politique étrangère est apparue la semaine dernière quand elle a dit pendant un débat que l'Iran ne devrait jamais être autorisé à avoir un programme d'énergie nucléaire civile », programme auquel le pays, signataire du TNP, a droit. Le Los Angeles Times relève que même Bush ne va pas jusque là. "Ses positions pendant la campagne étaient vagues, parfois même naïves, mais avec un grand sourire, des cheveux bien coiffés et la volonté de mêler les vues socialistes traditionnelles et une rhétorique populiste, elle a battu ses adversaires plus pédants du parti. » écrit le quotidien de Los Angeles qui a trouvé des échos de JFK à son «nous allons gravir la montagne jusqu'à la victoire. »
Alors que tous les quotidiens soulignent les différences de style entre Ségolène et les autres candidats du PS, USA Today souligne que son background est le même que celui de ses concurrents des primaires. Le journal note qu'elle est revenue sur ses critiques de la semaine des 35 heures, « vache sacrée du parti socialiste. »
Ségolène a été élue sur des promesses de changement, mais en apportera t-elle assez ? se demande le Christian Science Monitor pour qui la France a besoin « de réformes vigoureuses à la Maggy Thatcher » pour libérer le marché du travail. Détail amusant : en parlant de Chirac, le quotidien mentionne qu'il est « membre du parti de Sarkozy. »

Le magazine online compare Ségolène et François à Hillary et Bill, « mais là c'est la femme qui a le charisme ». Des points communs : « comme leurs équivalents français, les Bill et Hill français se sont rencontrés pendant leurs études ». Comme Hillary, Ségolène ratisse au centre et « comme aux Etats-Unis, la presse n'arrive pas à décider s'ils sont rivaux ou co-conspirateurs ».
« La littérature française brûle t-elle ? » demande le New York Times. Quatre des six prix littéraires français sont allés à des romans écrits en Français par des non-français. « Ces voix extérieures apportent quelque chose absent de la fiction française » dit l'article qui cite Antoine Audouard qui trouve que trop de romans français traitent de « ma souffrance, ma douleur, mon couple, ma chambre ». La critique du monde Josyanne Savigneau observe que les auteurs français « préfèrent produire des textes » que des histoires. D'où des traductions en France de roman étranger à narration solide tandis que les textes français présentent moins d'intérêt traduits à l'étranger. « Le nombre d'auteurs français à avoir eu récemment un impact international est exactement de un: Michel Houellebecq.» note l'article.
A défaut de production récente française, le New Yorker est parti sur les traces de Minou Drouet, enfant prodige ou imposture de la poésie il y a 50 ans. En novembre 1955, Time lui consacrait un article commençant par « en France où la littérature peut être le sujet chaud de première page des journaux… » On apprend dans le New Yorker qu'elle a été mariée avec un collègue de Thierry Leluron, puis un garagiste breton. Le journaliste est allé voir où elle vivait aujourd'hui à « Guerche de Bretagne » une ville sans intérêt historique ou touristique, à une demi heure de Rennes « l'équivalent d'une petite ville du nord de l'état de New York mais avec une place carrée au lieu d'une Main Street »

Film, documentaire, biographie… « et elle n'a même pas d'attachée de presse » L'article rappelle « la plupart des américains n'ont pas la moindre idée de qui elle est », comme dit l'historien Ron Chernow « ne sous-estimons jamais notre inculture en histoire » Pourquoi est-elle si digeste ? Sans idée du contexte, il est plus facile de la voir comme « une captive de la monarchie et captive de sa célébrité » note le quotidien, qui fait aussi valoir que les Américains ont peu de ressentiment pour ceux qui sont tout en haut, puisqu'ils pourraient y être un jour, « en d'autres mots, il y a beaucoup d'américains qui se reconnaissent – à raison ou non – en Marie-Antoinette » Et, note l'auteur, du point de vue de la frénésie de consommation aussi, « nous somme une nation de Marie Antoinette »
